According to The College Board, Subject Tests are "hour-long, content-based tests that allow you to showcase achievement in specific subject areas where you excel." Students typically take SAT Subject Tests (also known as SAT IIs) in subjects that they are taking advanced courses in, such as AP English or AP Physics. By doing this, the student is giving himself/herself the best possible opportunity to showcase his/her achievements. Primarily highly selective schools require or recommend that a student take SAT Subject Tests. Furthermore, elite colleges and universities look for students whose scores are in the 700s (out of 800 points). Therefore, it is crucial to study the material thoroughly and practice taking the test under timed conditions.
The student meets with his instructor one to two times a week for an hour session, usually in the spring of junior year. The instructor gives each student a diagnostic test to assess her strengths and weaknesses and to manage the curriculum accordingly. The number of sessions needed is dependent on the ability level of each student.
